Snap's sits at 24 Main Street in Bristol, right in the heart of the village, and it does what a good Main Street diner is supposed to do: it's open, it's reliable, the coffee cup stays full, and the food is better than you might expect from somewhere this unpretentious.

The décor leans nostalgic — old newspaper clippings on the walls, an embossed tin ceiling, the comfortable clutter of a place that's been there a while. It's the kind of room where locals sit at the counter and visitors end up in conversation with them. Full bar. Indoor dining and outdoor seating when weather allows.

The menu runs breakfast through dinner, and each meal has its moments. The eggs Benedict has a following for breakfast. The homemade corned beef hash is the real thing. Lunch leans toward burgers, wraps, and sandwiches, with the venison burger as the standout — ground venison blended with Vermont Smoke & Cure bacon and secret seasonings, topped with Cabot Vermont cheddar and Switchback caramelized onions on a warm pretzel bun. That's a sandwich written for this specific place in this specific state. The BBQ pulled chicken burger is another strong showing.

Dinner runs through comfort food territory: meatloaf, pasta, daily specials that pull from seasonal ingredients. The daily soup specials — mushroom beef barley, Mexican black bean and chorizo, vegetable beef — are worth checking when you walk in.

For vegans and vegetarians, Snap's is more accommodating than you might guess — Impossible burger, portobello mushroom caps, veggie burgers, and quinoa salads are on the menu. Gluten-free options as well.

It's Bristol's living room in restaurant form. When you're in town and hungry, Snap's is where you go.

It's also where my wife and I had our first date.
