On Route 7 South just outside downtown Middlebury, in a strip mall that also houses Drop-In Brewing, 7 South Sandwich Company has been putting out some of the best sandwiches in Addison County since 2017. It’s a family-owned operation — friendly folks behind a counter, fresh local ingredients, and a menu that rewards repeat visits.

The Roast Beef Kicker is the one people talk about: tender, medium-rare roast beef piled high, with sharp Vermont cheddar and a bold horseradish mayo on a grilled roll. It sounds simple and it hits hard. The key is the quality of the beef — not deli-case cold cuts but real roast beef sliced fresh, with the kind of flavor that makes you understand why this category of sandwich exists.

The grilled cheese is another sleeper hit — not a fancy grilled cheese, but a proper one, with cheddar, provolone, and Swisserella on buttery artisan bread, grilled until genuinely melty. Friday’s special version adds ham. It’s the kind of grilled cheese that makes you nostalgic for something you didn’t know you were missing.

The breakfast sandwiches run 7am–close: the BELT (bacon, egg, lettuce, tomato on a toasted bagel) is a favorite, as is anything involving their sausage and fresh egg combination. The Philly cheesesteak draws consistent praise. The fried pickles are worth ordering. The sweet potato fries are excellent, and the brownies — enormous portions — are legitimately great.

The counter staff are reliably warm and helpful, the kind of people who make a strip mall lunch counter feel like a neighborhood spot. 7 South is where you stop when you’re hungry, you want something real, and you don’t want to overthink it.
