Otter Creek Bakery has been at 14 College Street in downtown Middlebury since 1986. In a college town that sees turnover in restaurants and shops, nearly four decades in the same location means something. It means the food is consistently good, the staff is consistently warm, and the community keeps showing up.
It’s a European-style craft bakery and deli — small-batch, made fresh every morning, focused on quality over volume. The pastry case is the first thing you see when you walk in: croissants, almond croissants (described by more than one visitor as the best they’ve ever had), the signature Otter Paw danish, muffins, cookies, scones. The almond croissant has a committed following. The lemon pecan cookie is worth taking seriously. The baked goods have won awards from the American Institute of Food and Wine, Vermont Chapter, for Best Pastry Shop and Artisan Bread — not just local recognition, but real credentials.
My personal favorite is the olive twist. Golden-brown spirals, usually 6–10 inches long, with dark purple-black olive fragments visible in the ridges. The twisting exposes the interior layers, so you get crisp, caramelized edges alternating with soft crumb.
The exterior shatters slightly; inside stays chewy and open-crumbed. Kalamatas hold enough moisture that they steam a bit in place, leaving small soft pockets around each piece.
The sandwich menu is equally serious. The Vermonter — Vermont goat cheese, watercress, tomatoes, and honey mustard — is a revelation for anyone who hasn’t tried fresh goat cheese on good bread. The sourdough is made in-house and used as the base for most sandwiches; it’s genuinely good bread, the kind that makes every sandwich better. The Norwegian sandwich, the lentil eggplant curry soup, the daily specials — these are the kinds of options that bring people back.
The outdoor deck and café space is one of the nicest places to sit in downtown Middlebury. Coffee, a pastry, a morning paper, the foot traffic of College Street moving past. It’s a very good use of an hour.
